M(other)land

M(other)land. (ongoing)

Starting in 2018, I began to photograph known locations where my mother’s ancestors lived. Shrouded in mystery and with elements forgotten, I am piecing back together a family history across continents, oceans, and cultures. Using genealogical research, DNA testing, and limited family lore, I intend to identify either exact locations or nearby areas where these people lived.

My goal is to photograph all the homes that my mother lived in, starting in Boston, and going from there. Ultimately, I will go to Ireland, Latvia, and parts of the United States in search of my mother’s land. This is a long-term project, with many prongs into my other projects.

Below are these photographs organized by separate but overlapping installations and projects.

You may notice some repeated work here. Many of these photos were in Calling Home: Family Archives, but I want to add them here again to be in conversation with the whole series.
