      <image:title>Paintings - Foreigner in a Foreign Land</image:title>
<image:caption>2025. Acrylic on Canvas. 30” x 24” In Foreigner in a Foreign Land, a European starling perches on a Tree of Heaven, contending with a hot pink wrought iron fence. The starling and the tree are two species that, like so many people, crossed oceans in search of survival, only to be deemed invasive. From this solitary bird’s call forms a murmuration of her flock, echoing the Judgement card from the Rider-Waite tarot deck. She, like the archangel Gabriel, trumpets the call for collective awakening. The starling and the tree embody contradiction. Introduced by European settlers who longed for the familiar birds of Shakespeare’s England, it mirrors the story of colonization itself: both colonizer and colonized. It carries the vulnerability of migration and the arrogance of forgetting where one came from. Like the Tree of Heaven, it thrives in neglected spaces, creating beauty in what is overlooked. Foreigner in a Foreign Land asks how a nation built by immigrants can so easily forget its origins and how those once considered “foreign” now turn that judgment outward. The wrought iron fence transforms a barrier into something strange and luminous; it’s inviting yet exclusionary. This painting is born out of a single question: can redemption occur if we cannot recognize ourselves?</image:caption>

<image:title>Installation - Diesel Engine Operator (The Mother's Day Storm as told by my Uncle Mike at a birthday party)</image:title>
<image:caption>Context: Recorded at my cousin's birthday party, July 9th, 2022. My Uncle Mike recalls my late father's work at the Charles River Dam in Boston, as a Diesel Engine Operator, where he would operate large machines to pump out the floodwaters from the Charles River into the Atlantic Ocean to save Boston from flooding. This is crucial work because Boston historically was marsh and flood plan, and great portions are now comprised of in-fill, making the city extremely susceptible to flooding. My father would work every winter storm, Nor'Easter, hurricane, tropical storm, and other moderate to severe weather events to run and maintain these machines. I grew up very aware of the weather. In this story that my Uncle shares one particular storm in May 2006, when Mitt Romney (R) was governor. Rather than pay my father to stay overnight to maintain the machines, he decided to not run the machines to save money during this severe weather event. Ultimately this cost the state 2 billion dollars worth of damage from the flooding of the Muddy River into Kenmore Station. Truely, this is a story of a pennywise, pound foolish. Year: 2022 Media: My deceased father's work coat, 2 coffin nails, sound (speaker inside the sleeve of the coat)</image:caption>

<image:title>Community and Public Art - Slán Abhaile / Safe Home (2023-2024).</image:title>
<image:caption>Pronounced slawn a-ball-ya in Irish, Slán Abhaile/Safe Home was a community-focused, memory-driven bench in Boston's Dorchester, focused on the ongoing housing crisis impact on working-class residents. Inspired by benches and public infrastructure, the artwork was a repository where Dorchester neighbors can share collective memories of home through photography and oral storytelling Created with the Now+There Accelerator Program (Boston Public Art Triennial) this project was in Meetinghouse Hill, Dorchester from September 2023 - September 2024.</image:caption>

<image:caption>My mother, Kathleen Bowen Brown, grew up in Dorchester in the 1950s-70s. She faced a childhood of housing insecurity and economic hardship. Her struggle is alive and well in today. It is cyclical. Dorchester is home to people from all over the world: Vietnamese, Cape Verdean, Latine, Black, and Irish populations. Many have lived here their whole lives, while others have found Dorchester as their new home recently. Slán Abhaile are the words my recent Irish ancestors may have said to one another when wishing a loved one goodbye. The Hiberno-English translation means "safe home". It is a bid to wish someone safe towards home. The Irish (Gaelige) language is listed under the UNESCO Endangered Languages list. I wish to share my ancestral language to speak of home through time and generations, as a means to preserve communities and imagine better futures. A safe home is not just the land or the physical structure; it is created through collective memory, community care, and opportunities for genuine connection.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Rooted in photography, oral storytelling, and community archiving, Slán Abhaile / Safe Home grew out of my time walking and observing Dorchester’s built environment: classic triple-deckers lining the streets, the varied storefronts of Fields Corner and Meetinghouse Hill, and the public spaces where daily life unfolds. Even the project’s color palette comes directly from the neighborhood: the yellow-orange of the local Buddhist Center and the bright pink inspired by a nearby public installation. The project is intentionally a counterpoint to hostile architecture, which is urban design that uses the built environment to restrict or police behavior. These tactics disproportionately impact people who depend on public space, including youth, low-income residents, and those experiencing homelessness. Photo: Faith Ninivaggi</image:caption>

<image:caption>Examining Salem's History to Promote Housing Development. What We Learned from the Fire is an interactive public sculpture at Forest River Park in Salem that links the 1914 Great Salem Fire to today’s housing crisis. How can we honor our history while making room for future histories? This work was created in support by The City of Salem. Research and advocacy was supported by the MassCreative Advocacy and Organizing Fellowship and Solidarity Rising.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Bright green and shaped like a small house, the work has cabinet doors that open to reveal historical images of the Great Salem Fire Forest River Park encampments printed on plexiglass. On the inside of the doors, bilingual (English/Spanish) text adds information on current housing shortages, zoning, and homelessness in Salem. QR codes along the sides connect viewers to additional resources and a call to action, encouraging them to contact city officials in support of affordable housing, smart-growth policies, and decreasing homelessness. By inviting neighbors to learn, reflect, and respond, the What We Learned from the Fire uses local history to build empathy and spark constructive, pro-housing conversations in an interactive, whimsical manner. Why is this project at a specific park in Salem? In 1914, over 18,000 Salem residents, primarily immigrant Frano-Americans and the working class, lost their homes to the Great Salem Fire. This event is the last great urban fires of the 19th and 20th centuries. Seeking refuge, the displaced residents sheltered at Forest River Park, supported by the city and numerous charity organizations. As of 2024, public camping is banned when shelter beds are available within 15 miles of Salem’s borders. But yet, housing is inaccessible for the majority of people, especially those who are unhoused. What if we acted with clarity, swiftness, and vision to house people just like our ancestors did in 1914-1916?</image:caption>

<image:caption>celebrates the overlooked plants that thrive in disturbed soil and city sidewalks. By presenting these so-called weeds as a bouquet, the mural honors resilience, migration, and the ways nourishment can come from unexpected places. The work asks viewers to reflect on what we inherit, what we offer, and how communities grow. This work was created with and supported by The Punto Urban Art Museum part of the North Shore Community Development Coalition in Salem, Massachusetts, as a part of their 2025 RAÍCES | ROOTS (Soy de aquí | I am from here) mural exhibition.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Painting and Photography - Foreigner in a Foreign Land</image:title>
